This can be done by using wood paneling in a different color than the rest of the room. For example, if the walls are light colored you could use a darker wood paneling for the accent ceiling. Painting is an inexpensive way to decorate\/ design your exposed ceiling. I would not recommend using black paint if you have a low basement ceiling as the black paint will make the space appear even tighter and more confined. Painting can also be used to cover up any imperfections that might be present in an exposed basement ceiling such as piping or electrical wiring.
